2014-2015 PARCC Testing

Parent Letter

Last spring, students took new state tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics known as the PARCC tests. These tests measure how well students master the knowledge and skills every student should have in a particular grade level according to Ohio’s Learning Standards. These standards now place greater emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and writing because these are the skills today’s colleges and employers expect in graduates. Every student’s score on a PARCC test falls into one of five performance levels.  Ohio’s performance levels are what Ohio schools follow, so it’s important to understand your child’s performance based on Ohio’s descriptions. The performance levels and descriptions are listed below.

PARCC TESTING PERFORMANCE LEVELS AND DESCRIPTIONS

PARCC Performance Level: 5, Exceeded Expectations

What this Means in Ohio: Your child’s understanding is ADVANCED. S/he demonstrates a
distinguished command of Ohio’s Learning Standards for this subject. S/he is on track to succeed in college or other higher education upon graduation.

PARCC Performance Level: 4, Met Expectations

What this Means in Ohio: Your child’s understanding is ACCELERATED. S/he demonstrates a
strong command of Ohio’s Learning Standards for this subject. S/he is on track to pursue college or other higher education upon graduation.

PARCC Performance Level: 3, Approached Expectations

What this Means in Ohio: Your child’s understanding is PROFICIENT. S/he demonstrates an
appropriate command of Ohio’s Learning Standards for this subject. This means she is prepared for instruction in the next grade.

PARCC Performance Level: 2, Partially Met
What this Means in Ohio: Expectations Your child’s understanding is BASIC. S/he shows a partial command of
Ohio’s Learning Standards for this subject. This means that to prepare for the next grade, s/he will need support targeted to areas where s/he showed only a partial command of the subject.

PARCC Performance Level: 1, Did Not Yet Meet Expectations
What this Means in Ohio: Your child’s understanding is LIMITED. S/he shows a minimal command of Ohio’s Learning Standards for this subject. This means s/he has gaps in learning that need additional support if s/he is to be prepared for what will be taught in the next grade.
