After graduating from The Ohio State University, Cara began what would become a distinguished career with the Columbus City Schools as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Cara was instrumental in developing the girls athletics program at Briggs High School after the passage of Title IX of the Civil Rights Act. She coached volleyball, basketball, softball, and was a cheerleading advisor for many years. In 1982, her softball team went to the Final Four of the OHSAA playoffs. Cara served on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance from 1992 to 1994. She also oversaw development of the Health and Physical Education curriculum for Ohio schools and served as Supervisor of Physical Education and Health for the Columbus City Schools.
