David Lucht

David Lucht – Cardinal Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2015

Fire Safety

Class of 1961

David Lucht started out as a “student firefighter” with the Middlefield Fire Department, graduated from Cardinal in 1961 and then attended the Illinois Institute of Technology on a full scholarship.  He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering.  Over the course of a long and distinguished career, David served as State Fire Marshal for Ohio, authored the first Ohio Fire Code, and drafted fire safety provisions for the Ohio Building Code.  In 1974, President Gerald R. Ford appointed David Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Fire Administration, a post that the U.S. Senate confirmed.  President Jimmy Carter reappointed him to the same position.  David stepped down as Deputy Administrator in 1978 to take a position at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts; he retired in 2005.  He is the author of several publications and the recipient of many awards.
