NEW!  “Changes as We Grow”

Beginning on December 12 through December 15, 6th graders will participate in a co-ed 4-day program called “Changes as We Grow” as part of their Health curriculum. The program’s concentration is on preparing students for the emotional, social and physical changes they will experience as they begin adolescence. The program combines a review of the 5th grade maturation and reproduction unit and is the second year of a county wide, multi-year initiative that brings children age appropriate information about personal growth, relationships and abstinence.

We respect your choice, as a parent, to have your child participate or not participate in this program. If you would like your child to participate in the “Changes as We Grow” program, you do not need to do anything. If you do not want your child to participate in this program, please call the CMS office at 440.632.0261 ext. 4000 to let us know that you do not want your child to participate. If you get a voicemail, please leave a message letting us know of your wishes.

Parent letters will be sent home the week of November 28. The link for the Maturation Video for Changes as We Grow for 6th grade students is:  https://youtu.be/Bw1N06PKhu4  Always Changing and Growing Up – Co Ed Puberty Education.

Note from the Nurse

Parents of 6th graders moving into 7th grade, the state of Ohio requires that the Tdap vaccine be administered on or after your student’s 10th birthday and a dose of Meningococcal (MCV4) be administered prior to entering the 7th grade.  These vaccines may be offered at your doctor’s office, Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, or Wal-Mart.  The Geauga Health Department may be able to provide assistance if needed.
The school health staff is required to complete vision and hearing screenings on all new students and all students in the 5th and 7th grades, unless their parent declined the screenings.  These screenings should begin in the middle of October.  If you have concerns about your child’s vision or hearing and they are not in these grades, please contact me to discuss options.  I can be reached at 440-632-0261, ext 4005 or marie.roake@cardinalschools.org.  If your student fails a screening, a re-screening will be completed about a week after the first screening.  If they fail the re-screening a letter will be sent home explaining which screening was failed and why they failed it.  Please take the letter to a doctor and have it completed.  Please return completed forms to the Middle school or have it faxed to 440-632-0294.
Thank you.

Parent Communication Survey:

Please take a few minutes to provide some feedback to our leadership.  As we move forward, we are trying to provide the best format of communication from the district to it’s families.  We would like to accommodate your preference of communication that best fits your needs.  We will share the results here after the Holiday break and begin implementing the feedback from you in the near future.  Thank you in advance for providing us your thoughts.

NEW!!!   Medication Guideline Changes:

Dear Parents/Guardians,
In order to more fully align our daily practices in the health offices with the current school board policy we are implementing a change to the medication policy.  Beginning on Monday, October 31, 2022, we will no longer be able to administer any medication to your student without a prescription.  This means that all medications, including over-the-counter medications, will require a prescription from a licensed physician before we are able to administer them.  Please remember that all medications must be brought in by a parent or guardian for legal and safety reasons.  Any medications previously dropped off must be picked up by an adult by Thursday, November 3, 2022.  A more detailed note about this change was sent home with students last week.  If you have any questions or need a copy of the note please contact the health staff at your student’s school.
Thank you,
Marie Roake, Cardinal Middle & High School Nurse

District Summer Update for August 10, 2022

Welcome Cardinal students and families to the final week of summer break!  I hope that you have had time to relax, enjoy your time off and are rejuvenated to return for the 2022-23 school year.  I am your new Superintendent, Jack Cunningham and I am excited to begin this chapter of my career here at Cardinal Local.  I look forward to meeting each of you throughout the beginning of the school year and I am anxious to get to know the community and traditions of both Cardinal Local and Middlefield!!

I wanted to communicate a few items today to make sure that everyone is aware of a couple of events or changes for the 2022-23 school year.

  1.  The district is no longer engaged in the “Early Release Wednesdays” each week.  Buildings will be on regular schedule all week when school is in session.  The district will add a monthly professional development day throughout the year where students will not attend school in the building but will have assignments/learning through Google Classroom and/or “blizzard bags” assignments.  The district will communicate those dates the first couple weeks of the school year.  Those PD days will not begin until the month of October.
  2.  Cardinal High School has now revamped the day schedule back to a traditional 7 period day and moved away from the “block” schedule from the past couple of years.  I am sure that there will be some transitions for both staff and students…Please don’t hesitate to communicate with our administration and staff along the way.
  3.   I hope that you are available to visit the “Back to School Bash” this Saturday from 11:00 to 2:00 at the HS stadium.  Please look over the attached flyer and contact your building or the Board office for questions.
