Early Release Wednesdays

The Cardinal Local School District is part of Cohort 2 for the State Personnel Development Grant.  The grant requires all participants to implement the state model, Ohio Improvement Process, which requires the development of teacher based teams. The 2019 – 2020 School Year will continue to focus on creating and improving these high functioning teacher-based teams (TBT’s) so that best instructional practices can be implemented for ALL students. The Early Release Days will provide the necessary time for those teams to develop. Below are the Early Release dates for the year.  There will be a total of 29 early release dates.  Additional Information

 Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are we doing early release Wednesdays?

As part of our implementation of Teacher Based Teams, Building Leadership Teams, and a District Leadership Team, we are providing time during the scheduled work day so that teachers have time to collaborate with their grade levels and content areas to specifically discuss:

  • What students are learning
  • How students are learning and progressing
  • How to meet specific student learning needs
  • Student assessment data
  • How to improve instruction

In addition, after this year, we will no longer need to have professional development days (Waiver Days) on the school calendar.  All future professional development can take place during the Early Release Days.

What about Calamity Days?

Last school year we switched from days to hours.  Students in grades K-6 are required to be in school for 910 hours per year, and students in grades 7-12 are required to be in school for 1,001 hours per year.  Our current hours are as follows:

  • K-4: 1,076 hours (#of calamity days: 17.7)
  • 5-6: 1,120 hours (# of calamity days: 24)
  • 7-8: 1,120 hours (# of calamity days: 9.6)
  • 9-12: 1,131 hours (# of calamity days: 11.2)

Although we don’t anticipate using more than the lowest calculated days (grades 7-8, 9.6 days) our current schedule should provide us with plenty of time in the event of inclement weather or other emergency.

What about athletes?

In grades 7-12 we will be hosting study tables so that athletes will not have to leave campus on scheduled practice/game days.
